Status Of Women In Maryland
My work and ministry, in many ways, have centered around empowering women. In 2016, I was appointed by the governor of Maryland to the Maryland Commission for Women (MCW). It is an appointment that has expanded my understanding of issues facing women and has also provided me access to a great and diverse network of women who strive to improve the lives of women across Maryland.
Also, in 2016, the MCW launched its Voices of Maryland Women Listening Tour, traveling more than 3,000 miles across the state over a two-year period to conduct 19 public forums. Maryland women spoke to the Commission about the challenges they face in their everyday lives. An online survey was also made available in four languages to gather further information. Maryland Women listed the following as their top 5 concerns:
domestic violence and sexual assault,
paid time off for parental and medical leave,
drug abuse and addiction,
women in leadership positions, and
affordable, quality childcare.
Today the MCW released the Maryland Women: A Status Report, a compilation of information gathered from a statistical perspective and includes data by gender and race when available and highlights gender differences and inequities between men and women in Maryland. While this information is intended to serve as a resource for developing statewide legislation, programs, and policies to address the needs of women in Maryland, it is also useful for those who work daily to offer hope and improve the lives of women everywhere. You can find the report on the MCW website.
I trust the voices of the women of Maryland will help to inform your work and empower you to make a greater impact wherever you are.
